Description

Spen House is an early to mid-19th century farmhouse with attached outbuildings, built under a single roof. The building is constructed of coursed watershot rubble with a stone slate roof. The main farmhouse section is three bays wide, while the attached outbuildings extend for five bays. The farmhouse’s central entrance features a four-panel door set in an ashlar surround with moulded imposts and a pediment. It has 16-pane sash windows with slab sills and sill-like lintels, and end stacks. On the ground floor of the outbuildings, there is a partly-shuttered window, a board stable door, a board door, a shuttered opening, and board coach-house doors beneath a four-centred arch of rubble voussoirs with a hood-mould. The first floor of the outbuildings mirrors the farmhouse with 16-pane sash windows. Slab gutter brackets are present. A stack is located at the right-hand end. According to the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Buildings Study Group Report No 919, the building is an example of vernacular architecture.
