Description
Haw House is a farmhouse, now a house, dated 1811 but incorporating details from the 16th or 17th century. The 1811 work was done for J & E Hobson. The building is constructed of rubble with some ashlar dressings and has a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high with a north-east front featuring three bays and quoins. The central entrance has a board door with a glazed panel, set in an ashlar quoined surround that includes ovolo moulding on the arris, a triangular soffit to the lintel, and shield-shaped stops with circular discs from a former hoodmould. Above the doorway is a sandstone plaque inscribed "J & E HOBSON 1811". There is a sash window above the door and other windows are 4-pane sashes. The windows have hoodmould stops, and all but the first-floor window in the first bay have moulded lintels. The building features ashlar copings and end stacks.
At the rear, which may include the original front wall of an earlier building, there is a part-glazed door in an ashlar surround with ovolo moulding on the arris, located between the first and second bays. To the right of this door is a round-arched landing window with 20th-century glazing. In the first and third bays, there are double-chamfered 2-light mullion windows. Inside, the ground-floor room to the left has a board door in an architrave with an egg-and-dart motif and a round-headed niche. The kitchen at the rear right features a square chamfered beam and old joists, possibly dating from the 16th or 17th century. A stone staircase with stick balusters completes the interior.
