Description
This is a barn built around 1800 by John Foss of Richmond, located approximately 100 metres north of Swinithwaite Hall. The barn is constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys and is arranged in a 1:3:1 bay configuration. The chamfered quoins add to its architectural detail.
The central three bays project slightly and have chamfered quoins. On the ground floor, the second and fourth bays contain board barn doors set in elliptical-arched ashlar surrounds with keystones. The first, third, and fifth bays feature round-arched recesses that hold part-shuttered windows beneath monolithic channelled wedge lintels. An impost band connects all the openings.
On the first floor, there are square openings with lattice shutters in ashlar surrounds, topped with cambered lintels. The barn has a hipped roof. The rear elevation showcases flush quoins and five board doors in ashlar surrounds with impost blocks; the doors in the first, third, and fifth bays are round-arched, while those in the second and fourth bays are flat-headed. Vents are created by vertical stone slates.
On the left return at ground floor, there is a shuttered opening in a round-arched ashlar surround with a keystone, and the first floor has an opening similar to the front. The right return features a door in an opening like that on the left return, with a pitching door above it.
