Description
The former church and schoolhouse, now a house, dates back to 1626 and was built for William Fawcett of Norwich. The building was restored and the church was rebuilt in 1848 by A.B. Higham for the Misses Dawson of Marshfield. It features coursed rubble and a graduated stone slate roof with quoins. The schoolhouse is a single-storey structure with one bay. It has a board door on the right within a quoined surround, with a restored lintel and a panel above displaying raised lettering "W F". To the left, there is a window with three trefoil-headed lights and a large external stack from 1626 on the left return.
The church section consists of a two-bay nave with a south porch and a lower one-bay chancel, topped with a bellcot at the west end. The porch entrance features a moulded arch, and there are two 2-light Decorated nave windows with hoodmoulds, a single-light chancel window, and a 3-light east window, both with pointed-arched hoodmoulds. The gable copings and a low central stack on the nave ridge complete the structure.
Historically, William Fawcett, the son of a local farmer who moved to Norwich, provided funding for the establishment of a school at Halton Gill. This school was to be run by a scholar/priest who would preach in the church and teach on Sundays and weekdays. The school closed in 1958, and the church served as a chapel of ease for Arncliffe. The building is included for its group value.
