Description
Clayton Windmills and the Millhouse attached comprise two complete windmills, the remains of a third, and an attached millhouse. "Jill," the older of the two windmills, dates from 1821 and is a post mill relocated from Dyke Road, Brighton, around 1850. It features a round house of tarred weatherboarding, a metal-sheathed roof and breasts, and sweeps without shutters. The fantail is missing, but the machinery remains intact. "Jack" is a brick tower mill, built in 1866 and faced with tarred metal plates. It has a gallery above the ground floor and a beehive cap with a finial. The framework for the fantail is complete, but the main sweeps are missing. The roof construction demonstrates a skillful example of spheroid framing. "Jack" connects to a mid-19th century millhouse, which is stuccoed, and to the ground floor of a third mill, known as Duncton mill, and older than “Jill.” This third mill was a mid-18th century post mill, taken down in 1866, and is represented by a round house. All three structures are combined to form a dwellinghouse.
