Description
Middle Lodge was built by Thomas Hopper in 1840. It is a two-storey building with three windows facing south and two windows each facing east and west. The exterior is faced with Roman cement and features a hipped slate roof. Each window bay is flanked by twin pilasters that support the cornice and parapet. In the center, there is a prominent portico with four Doric columns and a pediment. The windows on the east and west sides are also flanked by pilasters, which create round-headed arcading over the first-floor windows. On the west side, there is a plaque that notes, "The new plantation of this avenue was commenced on the last day of the reign of His Majesty George III of blessed memory Saturday January 29 1820. J Holden Sculpt." This avenue leads west through Stansted Forest from the house to Rowlands Castle.
