Description
The former stables and former service wing of Stansted House were built by James Wyatt in 1786 and later rebuilt by Thomas Hopper in 1840. They survived a fire in 1900. The building is two storeys tall with seven windows, constructed of white brick. The end window bays project and feature long and short quoins made of Roman cement. It has a stringcourse, cornice, and a parapet with a pediment above the central window bay. The windows are surrounded by moulded architraves, and the glazing bars remain intact. At the center of the roof is a heavy tower with a complex design, featuring groups of four columns at the corners, a recess with two columns, and a clock face above. It has a dentilled cornice and a parapet topped with a stepped pyramid and a weather vane. On each side of the building are carriage archways leading to the stable yard, which are round-headed and flanked by twin columns with a cornice and parapet above. The yard is a long rectangular space situated between the stable building and the service wing of the house, which also dates from 1786. The service wing is a two-storey structure of white brick that originally had a tower similar to that of the stables, but this has since been demolished.
