Description
The East Dean War Memorial is a war memorial designed in 1919 and erected in 1920 by Arthur S Haynes of Northiam. It features a tapering octagonal shaft made of green sandstone, topped with an embattled cap and a small bronze cross. The base of the shaft displays crosses within circles on four sides, leading to a bulbous box and an octagonal plinth. The plinth is inscribed with the words, "To the Glory of God. A permanent reminder of those from East Dean and Friston who died that right should triumph. Erected 1920." The entire structure stands on three circular steps made of flint, paved with sandstone, and is surrounded by 10-sided iron railings, which are not of special architectural or historic interest. The height of the memorial is 18 feet 6 inches.
