Description
The Parish Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed church located in Stopham. It features a chancel, nave, north and south porches, and a west tower with a hipped tiled roof. The chancel and nave are early Norman in style, with 13th-century windows in the chancel and 14th-century windows in the nave. The tower was rebuilt around 1600. The east window, dated 1638, is a heraldic window that was brought from the Manor Farmhouse and inserted into the church at that time, although the glass itself is older. Inside, the church contains a notable collection of brasses commemorating members of the Barttelot family of Stopham House, dating from the early 15th century onwards, as well as a series of mural tablets dedicated to the Barttelots. This is a very good medieval church that remains unrestored.
