Description
Stopham War Memorial is located in the center of the village green in Sussex, in front of the Grade I-listed Parish Church of St Mary. The memorial is made of locally quarried Midhurst stone and features a five-tier octagonal stepped base. On top of this base is an octagonal plinth that is inscribed with the names of those who fell in the two world wars. Above the plinth rises a tall, tapering octagonal shaft, which is topped with a moulded collar and a Latin cross. Below the collar, there is a badge carved in relief on the front face of the shaft. At the bottom of the shaft, a cross is also carved in relief, followed by the inscription "SURSUM CORDA" in Gothic script, which means 'Lift up your hearts'.
The main inscription on the memorial reads: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918," with additional names inscribed on the other faces of the plinth. The rear face of the plinth is inscribed with "1939 + 1945/ (NAMES)".
Surrounding the base of the memorial are low wooden posts that carry a chain.
