Description

This is a house, formerly a post office and earlier a public house, dating from the early 15th century. It incorporates timbers from a building believed to be of around 1300, and was significantly altered around 1600 and 1620, with further changes in the 18th century and window replacement in the 19th century. The building is timberframed, with a facade of flint and clunch. A plaque on the front wall of the eastern bay is dated "Maye 1620" and is now painted. It has a tiled roof with gablets and a large, stuccoed chimneystack. The house is two storeys high with two windows. It features 19th-century sliding casements and a penticed tiled porch.

The original layout was of a three-and-a-half bay hall-house, with a rear aisle, a cantilevered return aisle at the east end, and a front aisle that was either one bay wide or full-length. Reused timbers from the likely 14th-century building are visible as arcade posts and rafters within the hipped ends, with the arcade posts still present. The roof is a simple paired rafter and collar construction of around 1400, and is heavily sooted. Around 1600, the house was altered with the insertion of a chimney and a ceiling, dividing the open hall. An open fireplace with a timber lintel and the remains of a recess to the south are also present. An archaeological report (Report no 1241 by David and Barbara Martin of University College Field Archaeology Unit 1995) provides further details.
