Description

Lewes Railway Station, built in 1889, is the third railway station in Lewes and is designed in a flamboyant classical style. The Booking Hall is constructed of stock brick with stone and red brick dressings, featuring one storey and nine bays. The central five bays are recessed and include three cambered headed arched windows and two cambered headed arched doorcases with keystones. A large projecting wooden canopy, supported by two cast iron columns in a late 19th-century style but built in the late 20th century, covers the entrance. The two end bays on each side project and have round-headed windows with red brick voussoirs, stone hood moulds, and keystones. Stone impost blocks are present throughout, and pilasters separate the central and end sections. A pierced stone parapet is adorned with stone "acorn and spike" urns. The main feature of the station is a large central rectangular lantern topped with a pyramidal roof. Inside, this lantern has a cross-braced roof, and the Ticket Office retains cast iron half columns with decorative capitals. To the right of the Booking Hall is an early 20th-century shop addition built with matching materials, which is not of special interest. The left side has five gables with glazed roof lights, while the right side features a footbridge that connects all the platforms, supported by cast iron columns and a cast iron superstructure with criss-cross walls and continuous glazing above. The platform buildings maintain their original cast iron columns, brackets, and wooden canopies.
