Description

This building began as maltings in the early to mid-18th century and subsequently served as a warehouse, now containing two shops with offices. It is an early to mid-18th century timber-framed building with a rendered front and red brick side walls, exhibiting later 19th-century façade alterations. The front has a curved gable and a wide, centrally-placed first-floor window recessed within a canted projection, flanked by painted panels. A wide double shopfront from the early 20th century occupies the ground floor, featuring central paired doors. The building is topped by very deep, plain tiled roofs. Internally, the structure features a 7-bay timber-frame with a kiln area to the west, which may have been rebuilt. The timberwork is of heavy scantling, pegged together, incorporating square posts and heavy curved braces. Originally used as maltings for Beards Brewery until the early or mid-19th century, when they were replaced by maltings within the Castle Precincts, this is the earliest surviving maltings in Lewes.
