Description

Rosecroft Cottage is a group value building comprising two houses, originally four, located on the south side of East Street, Hambledon. The property was used as a poorhouse from around 1720 to 1840. The core structure dates to the 17th century, with alterations and additions from the 18th and early 19th centuries, and 20th-century renovations. The walls are a combination of painted brick in a Flemish Garden Wall bond, flint with brick quoins and vertical bands, rendered surfaces and a small exposed timber frame. The roof is tiled, with a catslide at the rear. The building is timber-framed and has an L-shaped plan, extended to form a U-shaped block. The north-west front elevation has two storeys and five windows above four, with 20th-century casement windows. There are two plain doorways, each with a tiled canopy supported by brackets. The south-west wing is wider and taller, featuring hipped dormers on an elevation that incorporates one storey and an attic.
