Description
The Stables of Firle Place, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, form three sides of a courtyard. They are constructed of white brick with a slate roof. The central section features a prominent ashlar area with three coachhouse doors on the ground floor, flanked by pilasters and topped with lunette windows. Above this is a balustraded parapet with a solid centre that includes a clock face between twin pilasters, and behind it stands an octagonal bell turret. The flanking sections are also of white brick, each slightly projecting at the centre with a round-headed doorway and semi-circular fanlight, along with one window above. The projecting wings mirror this design, featuring a central projection with a doorway and window above, and two additional windows on each side, with the ground floor windows being round-headed. Each end of the wings is flanked by coupled stone pilasters and has a lunette window at first floor level. The wings are connected by a wrought iron railing with three double gates in the centre, complete with a crested overthrow. At the back of the central section, there are residential quarters that are two storeys high with six windows; the ground floor is faced with flints while the upper storey is red brick, and the glazing bars remain intact. The Riding School, which is contemporary with the Stables, is located to the north-west and is built of red brick with a hipped slate roof, featuring five high-placed lunette windows on the east and west walls.
