Description

Highgreen Manor is a country house with two cottages attached to the rear, built around 1885 and extended in 1894 for Mr. Morrison Bell. The building features rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and a Welsh slate roof.

The manor is divided into two sections. The older section on the left is two storeys high and has five bays. The central three bays include a gabled porch and paired sash windows, each topped with stepped and castellated gables. The end bays are designed as round towers, featuring corbel tables and ashlar parapets with slit windows and blank recesses in raised moulded surrounds. These towers also have moulded cornices and tall conical roofs with swept eaves and lead finials. The rest of the building has hipped roofs with tall corniced stacks.

The right section is an L-plan addition. A recessed linking section on the left includes a part-glazed door with a mullioned overlight, and above it are five small 6-pane casements in raised moulded surrounds. The projecting right bay features a four-light window on the ground floor and a canted oriel window on the first floor, supported by a moulded corbel and inscribed with the date C 1894 and the initials L. Flanking the oriel are two carved panels in foliage frames, with the W B M. Morrison Bell crest on the right and a bell on the left. Above the oriel is a gable flanked by chimneys with a pronounced batter.

Inside, there is a stone fireplace with a moulded mantelshelf and a large segmental overpanel that bears the Morrison Bell crest, all set within an aedicule featuring pilasters and a modillion cornice.
