Description

The Cornmill, located approximately 30 metres north of Mill Farmhouse, is a corn mill and attached outbuildings dating from the mid 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed from squared sandstone on a rubble plinth and features a pantile roof. The mill is two storeys high and has three bays, with a 1½-storey, two-bay cartshed attached to the left and additional single-storey outbuildings further left.

The mill has a central plank door flanked by partly blocked fixed light windows, all with tripartite herringbone-tooled lintels. There is a board lifting door at the centre of the first floor, also flanked by similar windows on the ground floor, with timber lintels. All windows have tooled stone sills, and the building features coped gables and shaped kneelers. The cartshed has double slatted doors beneath heavy timber lintels, with a fixed light and timber lintel above leading to the granary, and a coped gable to the left.

The mill's tailrace is routed through a vaulted stone culvert that passes under the mill buildings. Inside, the mill machinery remains intact, including a wheel chamber at the rear that houses an overshot iron wheel, made around 1890 by J and L Horsfield of Leeds. On the first floor, the main shaft is chamfered with stops, and three sets of stones are present, including one set of French burr stones and two others with their furniture. The gearing for subsidiary machinery is also intact, including a well-worn tree trunk in the attic that served as the spindle for the sack hoist. The mill was operational until 1975.
