Description

The stable and byre building, located to the south-east of Hart Hall, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with a horse-gin and pigsty added at the south-east end in the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of coursed herringbone-tooled sandstone and features stepped eaves and pantiled roofs, forming an L-plan. This long, single-storey building has a low loft above and scattered openings. One doorway and one window are chamfered, while other openings show signs of alteration.

The south-east gable end includes three rows of pigeon holes with alighting shelves, and a stepped, chimney-like feature at the apex with three plus two pigeon holes in stages, along with slit vents and a blocked door. The south-west wall has three boarded doors, six small pivoted windows, and two loft openings, one being a door and the other a window.

Attached to the south end is the horse-gin house, which has a large boarded door under an oak lintel and an open section under the eaves extended with corrugated iron. The pigsty is also attached, featuring a henhouse above, with an ascending row of throughstones forming steps to the henhole in the north-east gable end. There are two additional pigeon holes and an alighting shelf in the gable peak. This building is included for its group value.
