Description

The Hinderwell, Port Mulgrave and Runswick War Memorial Clock Tower is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Aislaby stone and is located at the junction of High Street and Runswick Lane, near the Grade II-listed High Farmhouse and other Grade II-listed structures within its grounds.

This memorial is designed in the Edwardian Baroque style and features a clock tower topped with a segmental pediment on a stepped base. The main part of the tower is heavily rusticated and includes block columns at the north-east and north-west corners, along with a dentilled cornice. A string course runs beneath the cornice, with an arched section on the north face that displays the clock face. The tower's main body has a splayed ashlar foot resting on a rusticated plinth, all standing on a two-stepped base.

On the north face of the tower, a stone table with a moulded sill lists the names of 25 individuals who fell in the First World War. An inscription on the north face of the splayed foot reads, "PASS NOT THIS STONE IN SORROW BUT IN PRIDE/ AND LIVE YOUR LIVES AS NOBLY AS THEY DIED." There are also tablets on the east and west faces, inscribed with the years 1914 and 1918, respectively. An access hatch is located on the south face. Additionally, a stone tablet on the north face of the plinth commemorates the dates of the Second World War and the names of 10 fallen soldiers from that conflict.

The memorial is surrounded by a paved area enclosed by a stone dwarf wall topped with railings. The wall features two gate posts to the north, which support a metal gate providing access to the memorial area.
