Description
This is an outbuilding located approximately 20 metres north of Elm House, dating from 1780, as indicated by the lintel, and extended later. It was built for Thomas Chapman. The structure is made of roughly tooled sandstone and has a pantile roof. The building features a barn at the right end and a loose box to the left, with a stable and byre that have a loft over them added further to the left. It is a single-storey building with a five-bay front, which includes five stable doors and a shuttered pitching window at the right end. The lintel above the centre door is inscribed with "Mr Thos Chapman. 1827." The building has a stepped eaves course, coped gables, and rectangular kneelers on the left, while the right has a shaped kneeler resembling a section of dentilled cornice. On the left gable end, there is a flight of stone steps leading to a loft door, with a dog kennel situated below. Inside the barn, there are two pairs of raised A-apex trusses with tie beams. In the stable to the left of centre, stall partitions and a hay rack are still present. This outbuilding is included for its group value.
