Description
This is a dovecote dating from the mid to late 18th century, located approximately 2 metres east of the Keeper's House on Broxa Lane in Hackness. It is constructed of dressed sandstone and features a slate roof. The dovecote is square in shape and has two storeys. The front has a plank stable door set beneath a triple-keyed lintel. There is a roundel on the upper storey, and raised bands are present at both the first floor and eaves level. The roof is pyramidal in design. On the right side, there is a lunette with a tooled surround at the upper stage. Inside, the ground floor has a tunnel-vaulted roof, and there is a wooden trapdoor that provides access to the upper storey. The pigeon loft in the upper storey is lined with brick and is said to contain nesting holes in all four walls.
