Description
No 1 High Street is a former rectory built in the mid-18th century, with parts of an earlier rectory dating back to around 1600 still remaining at the rear. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a corbelled parapet and a first-floor band. It has a pantiled roof with stone copings and end chimneys, along with two gabled dormers. The structure is two storeys tall with an attic and consists of three bays. It has sash windows with glazing bars and a central six-panel door that is topped by a patterned fanlight, all set within a pedimented doorcase with fluted pilasters. There are one-storey extensions on both the right and left sides.
Inside, there is an impressive staircase leading to the first floor, which features a cut string design, two turned balusters per tread, and a ramped handrail with a spiral curtail on a fluted newel. The older section of the building includes a large elliptical-arched stone fireplace with a keystone and moulded imposts, as well as a substantial side-purlin roof.
