Description

The gates and gate piers located approximately 100 metres north-east of Hackness Hall date from around 1810, while the gates themselves are likely from the 20th century. The gate piers are made of sandstone ashlar and are square in shape, standing about 3.25 metres high on tall plinths. They feature alternating long and short quoins that create bands of chamfered rustication. The piers have a moulded abacus, a frieze decorated with swags, and a moulded cornice. The flat stepped caps are topped with carved eagle finials. The gates include the winged spur crest of the Johnstone family and serve as the entrance to Hackness Hall.
