Description
Low Sadgill Farmhouse is a farmhouse with attached outbuildings, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with later alterations and additions. The building is constructed of roughly coursed stone rubble, featuring protruding through stones and drips, and has a graduated green slate roof with stone ridges and two stone chimneys. It is two storeys high.
The entrance door is made of oak boards and has an ornamental latch, situated under a gabled porch with a slate roof and side benches. To the left of the porch is a sash window, while to the right are two 19th-century fixed-light windows with single opening iron panes and a 20th-century replacement sash, all featuring glazing bars. The upper floor includes three sash windows and a 19th-century fixed light casement with a single opening light above.
The outbuilding to the left, likely originally a cowhouse and granary, has a 20th-century sash window and a 20th-century door set in an opening with slate voussoirs and a dripstone. The outbuildings to the right include a hayloft with a cart entrance and a cowhouse below, accessed from the gable end.
Inside, the farmhouse features two back-to-back slate fireplaces with slates running through, likely from the 18th century, along with massive chamfered oak beams. There are two flights of stone dog-leg stairs, a small timber mullioned window, and old boarded doors, two of which have ornamental latches. A spice cupboard bears initials and the date 1670 MID, which is said by the owners to be for John and Dorothy Mattinson.
