Description
Newlands Church and former school, now a meeting room, was rebuilt in 1843 on an earlier site, with the school dating from 1877. The building features painted roughcast walls beneath a graduated greenslate roof. It has a 3-bay nave and chancel, a south stone porch, and a west twin bellcote. The single-storey, 2-bay former school is attached to the west end of the church. The nave includes a gabled porch and tall round-headed windows, while the school has casement windows in plain reveals. A rear extension features casement windows with glazing bars and rounded bars in the heads. The school has a wall plaque that reads: "NEWLANDS SCHOOL BUILT BY THE PARISHIONERS 1877, CLOSED 1967 THIS STONE WAS PLACED HERE IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF DOROTHEA POTTS HEADMISTRESS 1943-1963." Inside the church, there is a gallery over the vestibule and vestry, providing access to both the school and church. The interior also features the Royal Arms of George II dated 1737, a 17th-century pulpit and lectern, wainscoting made from reused 17th-century panelling, a stained glass window as a First World War memorial, and late 19th-century furnishings and fittings.
