Description
Hartsop Hall is a typical larger Lakeland farmhouse situated in a magnificent setting. The original 16th century house faces north towards Brothers Water, with a west wing added in the 17th century and a south wing in the 18th century. The building is constructed of stone and slate rubble, topped with a flag roof, and consists of two storeys. The entrance front, which faces south towards the farmyard, features 16-paned sash windows and an entrance beneath a catslide roof that extends from the barn. This barn is open and supported by two round piers, forming a porch or cartshed.
The south end of the south wing is at a lower level but has the same roof and includes four sash windows. The rear of the older wing showcases a large stepped chimney and a three-light window on each floor, with each light being round-headed and supported by stone mullions. The walls here are made of coarser rubble with more mortar. The north front is whitewashed and partly cemented, featuring a steep roof, a stone doorway with a moulded lintel, and three windows on the ground floor, along with four above, consisting of one, two, and three lights, all of which are round-headed. The interior is said to contain 16th century moulded beams and part of a king-post roof, as well as a 17th century staircase.
