Description

Green Flat and the adjoining barn are a farmhouse and barn dating from the early to mid 17th century, with an extension dated and inscribed "W. & M.M. 1684" above the entrance, and a late 17th-century barn. The building features incised stucco walls set on a large cobble plinth, topped with a graduated greenslate roof and banded red sandstone chimney stacks. The central section appears to be the earlier farmhouse, which is two storeys high and consists of two bays. To the right is a two-bay barn under a common roof, and to the left is a newer, taller farmhouse, also two storeys and two bays.

The oldest part of the farmhouse has a Tudor-arched cross-passage doorway with a hoodmould. It includes three-light stone-mullioned windows, with those on the upper floor paired to create the appearance of a six-light window, and a ground-floor window under a hoodmould. There is a small fire window on the right side. The left house features a central Tudor-arched doorway with a 20th-century door, which is inscribed with "MAN THAT IS BORN OF WOMAN" in four lines, along with a date, carved dove, and wheel decorations. Flanking sash windows are set in 19th-century painted stone surrounds.

The barn has 20th-century plank doors in a 20th-century opening, with small oval vents above. The right return wall includes a Tudor-arched doorway, and both the rear of the original house and the barn have Tudor-arched doorways. The rear of the new house features an outshut with a catslide roof and sash windows in 19th-century stone surrounds. Inside, both houses have 18th-century stone fireplaces and beamed ceilings.
