Description

Culbone Lodge, along with the adjoining bridge over the sunken roadway on the east front, is a late 19th-century lodge that has been enlarged in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble and features hipped slate roofs that extend as a catslide over the carriageway on the west front. The building has overhanging eaves with a brick dentil cornice on the east block, and a large battered roughcast stack that projects into the carriageway opening on the west side of the original dwelling.

The lodge has a square plan with the carriageway adjoining the west front, which has been extended in the 20th century to form a roughly L-shaped layout. The land falls sharply to the south, and the bridge is located on the east side. Designed in the Arts and Crafts style, the north front is two storeys high and has three bays. The left bay features a lancet window under a brick lintel, with a butt joint leading to the carriageway opening. An oriel window projects through the sloping eaves above the carriageway entrance, and there is a two-light window in the set-back wing to the right. The ground floor also has a similar lancet window on the left, and a 20th-century door in a segmental-headed opening. A large horseshoe arch leads to the carriageway, while the right bay remains unlit on the north front. There is a gate pier at the left corner, although the other pier is missing.

The rear elevation has an extra storey due to the sloping site. The bridge features a semi-circular headed archway with brick voussoirs, and a small semi-circular arch for the stream, also with rubble voussoirs. The parapet is swept down with saddleback coping. Overall, Culbone Lodge and its bridge create an attractive composition on the sloping site and are part of the Ashley Combe estate.
