Description

This is a former Methodist Church, built in 1878 by Samuel Shewbrooks of Taunton. It is located in Dunster West Street and fronts onto St George’s Street. The building is constructed of dressed and coursed red sandstone, with rendered dressings around the windows and doors. It has a steeply gabled slate roof with ridge tiles and brick stacks. The design includes two storeys plus an attic. The ornate Dutch gable features moulded coping, a cornice, scrolls and a spiked ball finial. There are Doric pilasters and a cornice. A large central window is semi-circular, with rusticated voussoirs and glazing bars. The gable also has a triple louvred opening. The ground floor windows have moulded architraves, with cills resting on brackets. A double panelled door is set within moulded architraves, and modern bas-relief panels are above the door. Chapel House adjoins the church to the right. The rear section of Chapel House has a two-storey gabled roof concealed behind parapets with a moulded cornice. It features rusticated quoins, a semi-circular window with glazing bars and a cill on brackets, and a ground floor window with moulded architraves and glazing bars. The front elevation facing St George’s Street has brick dressings to the windows, segmental arches, a plain boarded door.
