DULVERTON CP Ashway Farmhouse

II Farmhouse. Possibly C17 enlarged and extensively altered early C19, refenestrated early C20. Roughcast over rubble, parallel range slate roofs, overhanging eaves, 2 external stone stacks left gable end and set in from left gable end at rear. Plan; possibly 2-cell and cross passage enlarged with parallel range at rear and staircase inserted in through passage. Two storeys, 4 bays, first floor leaded 2-light wooden mullioned and transomed windows flanking central gabled porch, left return small light right gable end, long leaded light ground floor left possibly to servants' staircase. Interior much altered, remains of early C19 stair with cut string, baluster removed otherwise little of interest.

Listed primarily for historic interest as the birthplace of Sir George Williams (1821-1905), who founded the YMCA (Young Mens Christian Association) in 1844. A plaque commemorates him on the facade.
