Description
Ashway Farmhouse is a farmhouse that possibly dates back to the 17th century, but it was enlarged and extensively altered in the early 19th century, with further changes made in the early 20th century, including new windows. The building is roughcast over rubble and features a parallel range of slate roofs with overhanging eaves. There are two external stone stacks, one at the left gable end and another set in from the left gable end at the rear.
The layout likely consists of two cells with a cross passage that has been enlarged by the addition of a parallel range at the rear, with a staircase inserted through the passage. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has four bays. The first floor has leaded, two-light wooden mullioned and transomed windows flanking a central gabled porch. There is a small light on the left return of the right gable end and a long leaded light on the ground floor left, which possibly leads to a servants' staircase.
The interior has been much altered, but there are remains of an early 19th-century staircase with a cut string, although the baluster has been removed, leaving little of interest. The farmhouse is listed primarily for its historic significance as the birthplace of Sir George Williams (1821-1905), who founded the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) in 1844. A plaque commemorating him is located on the facade.
