Description
Burrator Lodge is a reservoir lodge built in 1896, constructed from rock-faced rusticated snecked granite with a slate roof featuring gabled ends, bargeboards, and crested ridge tiles. The building has rusticated granite axial and lateral stacks and is designed in the Victorian Gothic style.
It has a T-shaped plan with a cross-wing on the right side, an entrance and stair hall at the center, and a kitchen located in the rear angle. The exterior is two storeys high, with an asymmetrical arrangement of windows on the east front. The right side has three windows in a projecting gabled and canted cross-wing, with the gable supported by braces over the splays. A granite tablet in the gable is inscribed 'Burrator Lodge 1896 Bond Mayor' and features a coat of arms. The first floor has two-light sash windows with shouldered heads, while the ground floor includes mullion-transom windows and a doorway to the left of center with a four-centred arch and hoodmould. There is a continuous label over the ground floor windows and doorway, along with a rusticated string course at the first floor level. The front doorway is accessed by steps with solid granite balustrades. Similar windows are found in the south gable end and on the north side of the cross-wing. At the rear, there is a two-storey outshut in the angle.
The interior of Burrator Lodge is largely intact and complete, featuring original joinery such as panelled doors, cupboards, and an open-well staircase with turned balusters and newels topped with ball finials. The hall includes a rustic granite chimneypiece, while other rooms have chimneypieces with bracketed shelves and moulded plaster ceiling cornices.
