Description
Butterwell is a well located approximately 4 metres west of East Coombe Farmhouse. It is likely from the mid to late 17th century, possibly earlier, and constructed from granite stone rubble, including some large roughly-dressed slabs. The well has been excavated into the ground down to the water table, with the head of water enclosed in a square-headed recess that is about 1.75 metres high and covered by a massive granite slab at ground level. In front of the well, to the west, there is a rectangular sunken area that is paved and walled with granite. On the north side of this area, a flight of granite steps leads up to ground level. The well opening has fittings for a doorway, but any shelves that may have been inside the well housing have since been removed.
