Description

This listing describes a row of three adjacent headstones located approximately 9 metres north of the aisle of the Church of St. Andrew in South Tawton. The two headstones from the 18th century are made of granite, while the early 19th-century headstone is made of slate. All three commemorate members of the Powlesland family.

The leftmost headstone is the earliest and stands about 350mm high with an elliptical head. Its front features a carved stylized winged cherub's head above an inscription in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, which records the death of Elizabeth Powlesland, although the date is not visible.

The right headstone is approximately 500mm high with a low elliptical head. It has a simple incised border and is inscribed in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the death of Robert Powlesland in 1796.

The central headstone, made of slate, stands about 1.20 metres high and has a shaped head carved with two angels holding a globe. The inscription begins with a word in Gothic lettering, followed by Roman serif upper and lower case lettering with some italicized text, recording the death of Thomas Powlesland in 1815. The Powlesland family continues to farm the parish from Powlesland Farmhouse.
