SX 69 SE SOUTH TAWTON SOUTH TAWTON

4/223 Lych gate and stile to churchyard of Church of St Andrew GV II

Lych gate and stile. Probably late C19, maybe early C20. Granite ashlar; slate roof. Description: this is the south gateway to the churchyard and is adjoining the right end of Church House (q.v). Tne gateway is flanked by neat granite ashlar sleeper walls with external batters. These carry an open plain oak frame, one narrow bay front and back each side and 4 side bays. Each has a cusped head of Decorated tracery. Across the gateway a low Tudor arch with carved foliate spandrels and there is a carved Latin quotation in Gothic lettering above on the head beam. Roof is hipped each end and surmounted by a timber cross. It contains panelled double gates and there are stone seats each side. Granite coffin stone with a cross inscribed on the top. Floor of unpended slates neatly set in square blocks at right angles to its neighbours. Granite ashlar steps down from the gate to the Village Square curving outwards and becoming wider and wider, the lower ones containing tiny pitched cobbles. To left of the lych gate a low granite ashlar wall contains a stile made of 3 granite rung-like horizontal slabs.
