Description

The lych gate and stile at the churchyard of the Church of St Andrew is likely from the late 19th century or early 20th century. It is constructed of granite ashlar with a slate roof. This structure serves as the south gateway to the churchyard and is located next to the right end of Church House. The gateway is flanked by granite ashlar sleeper walls that have external batters. These walls support an open plain oak frame, which features one narrow bay at the front and back on each side, along with four side bays. Each bay has a cusped head with Decorated tracery.

Across the gateway is a low Tudor arch adorned with carved foliate spandrels, and above the arch is a carved Latin quotation in Gothic lettering on the head beam. The roof is hipped at both ends and topped with a timber cross. The gateway includes panelled double gates and has stone seats on either side. There is also a granite coffin stone with a cross inscribed on the top. The floor is made of unpended slates arranged neatly in square blocks, set at right angles to each other. Granite ashlar steps lead down from the gate to the Village Square, curving outward and widening, with the lower steps featuring tiny pitched cobbles. To the left of the lych gate, a low granite ashlar wall contains a stile made of three horizontal granite slabs resembling rungs.
