Description

No. 26, Cross Street is a cottage, likely dating from the early 17th century. It may have originally been a rear wing of a house that stood on the site of the adjacent Wesleyan Chapel. The cottage was later divided into two dwellings, but has since been returned to a single residence. It is constructed of granite rubble, with roughcast on the front and the south end walls, and has a thatched roof with gabled ends. The section of roof abutting the former Wesleyan Chapel is covered with asbestos slate. A stone rubble axial stack is located to the right of the centre of the building, featuring a rendered brick shaft above the ridge. A smaller rendered brick stack is present at the left gable end.

The cottage originally had a 2-room plan, with the right-hand room being the larger. Both rooms were heated by a central axial stack with back-to-back fireplaces. A central doorway originally served as a lobby entry, but it has been replaced with doorways at each end of the front, providing direct entry into each room. The cottage is two storeys high, with an asymmetrical approximately 2/3 window range. The ground floor features C19 plank doors at either end; the left-hand door has a simple wooden hood. The former central doorway is now a small C20 fixed light window. A C19 three-light casement with glazing bars is located on the ground floor to the right of the centre. Above, on the first floor, is a C18 or early C19 three-light window set within a partly blocked opening. A blocked window is visible at the centre of the first floor.

The rear (west) walls are of granite rubble, and show a slight change in plane with a joint in the masonry to the right of the stack, suggesting some rebuilding at the south end. C20 casements are present at the rear, with the exception of a C19 three-light casement with small panes on the first floor to the left. A single-storey link building, constructed in 1912 and connected to the former Sunday School, adjoins the cottage to the south, and is not included in the listing.

Inside, the higher north room features a chamfered cross beam with run-out stops, while the lower south room has a chamfered, unstopped cross beam. The fireplace lintel has been removed from the right-hand room, and the fireplace in the left-hand room has been blocked with a C20 fireplace. A C17 hanging cupboard with moulded and panelled doors, drawers below, and a cornice above is positioned beside the stack on the first floor. Another hanging cupboard, dating from the early 18th century, is located beside the stack in the other room; it features fielded panel doors, drawers below, and a cornice above. The roof structure comprises roughly hewn collars, halved and pegged to the face of the principals. The presence of the hanging cupboards is considered remarkable, as such furniture was not commonly used until the late 18th century.
