Description
The Thomas Ford chest tomb is located in St Michael's Churchyard, approximately 40 meters south of the chancel. This chest tomb, likely from the late 17th century, is made of granite and consists of four pieces set on a chamfered plinth. It features a flat capstone with moulded edges and a carved inscription on top. The south side of the tomb has three short fluted pilasters without capitals, arranged with one in the middle and one at each end. The capstone bears an inscription within a border defined by incised lines, commemorating Thomas Ford of Sigford, who died on 19 November, though the year is not carved. In the center of the stone is what appears to be a Latin inscription. This likely refers to the Thomas Ford buried at Ilsington on 21 November 1663, according to the parish register.
