Description
Linhays adjoining the south-west of West Week Farmhouse were built in the late 17th century to early 18th century. They are constructed from granite stone rubble with some cob and feature a corrugated iron roof. The linhays form a U-shaped block facing a farm courtyard at the lower southern end of West Week Farmhouse. The northern side is bordered by the shippon end of the farmhouse, while the western and southern sides consist of linhays that open into the courtyard. The western wing has five bays, including a central bay for full freight carriage, and the southern side has nine bays, with the left three bays projecting forward. Originally, these structures were open-fronted. Monolithic granite posts support the roughly-finished crossbeams, with oak posts rising through the tallet set into the tops of each crossbeam. These posts feature curving heads that are lap-jointed onto the bases of A-frame trusses, which also have lap-jointed collars. All lap joints are well-pegged, and large iron nails, likely made by a blacksmith, are included, possibly as secondary additions. The roofs are nipped where they do not meet other structures. In the 19th century, the lower sections, used as a cow byre, were blocked with granite stone rubble. This range of linhays is well-preserved and is associated with the significant Dartmoor farmhouse of West Week.
