GV II

Cow house. Probably C18. Plastered granite stone rubble; corrugated iron roof, originally thatch. Plan and exterior description: the building faces south-west and is unusually wide. The ground floor is double depth and divided by an axial rubble wall with series of cow stalls either side. Roughly central through passage. The hayloft is uninterrupted and full width The central doorway each side has a hayloft loading hatch directly above and there are a series of narrow slit windows either side, some later enlarged to windows. Occasional vent to hayloft and some small apertures low down are probably drains. Roof is half-hipped to right and to left it butts adjoining Shilstone Cottages. '' Interior: has plain carpentry detail including a 7-bay roof of large A-frame trusses each employing 2 sets of pegged lap-jointed collars. This is an unusual cow house for its time. It also forms part of a group with Shilstone Farmhouse (q.v) and its farmbuildings in an unusually attractive location.
