Description

Hillside House is a house built in 1802, with renovations and rearrangements made around 1840. It is constructed from plastered stone rubble, possibly with some brick dressings, and features stone rubble stacks topped with plastered brick and some 19th-century chimneypots, all under a slate roof. The building has a T-shaped plan, with the main block facing north along the street. This block has a two-room layout, with the principal rooms having gable-end stacks and a large entrance hall in the center that contains the main stairs. A kitchen block projects at right angles to the rear of the center and has an end stack. The stair was rebuilt around 1840 when the kitchen block was added. The house is two storeys high.

The exterior features a symmetrical three-window front with 16-pane sashes, some of which are horned replacements, set under low segmental arches. This arrangement surrounds a central doorway that has a 19th-century six-panel door, which is now part-glazed, behind a 20th-century flat-roofed porch made from industrial pipes. The roof has gable ends on the left and runs continuously with that of the adjoining Broadmeadow on the right.

Inside, the house contains a significant amount of 19th-century joinery and other details. The main sitting room features an early 20th-century parquet floor, which was installed when the house was occupied by the foreman of works during the construction of Lutyens' Castle Drogo. Hillside House is part of an attractive group of listed buildings in the village.
