Description
Northcombe Farmhouse is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the late 16th century or 17th century, with later additions at the rear. The building has solid, rendered walls, likely made of stone or cob, and features a concrete-tiled roof. There are three stone chimneystacks: the first is on the left-hand gable and has a slightly tapered top with a projecting course of stones below it; the second is located in the center of the ridge, heating the former hall, and is similar but constructed with larger, more weathered stones; the third, which projects from the rear wall at the right-hand end, has a plain top.
The farmhouse has a three-room and through-passage plan, with the hall stack backing onto the passage, which has been modified to serve as an entrance hall. The building is two storeys high and has a four-window front, with all windows featuring small-paned 20th-century casements. The doorway, located in the second bay from the right, has a 20th-century door and porch. There are two large stone buttresses, one at the left-hand corner and one to the left of the doorway.
Inside, the hall fireplace has stone jambs, with the left one being hollow-moulded, and a wood lintel, although the moulding has been cut away. There is evidence of a former oven on the right-hand side. The rear wall of the stack, which faces the modern entrance hall, features a chamfered stone plinth and cornice, typical of stacks from the 16th and 17th centuries. The farmhouse is likely built of large granite ashlar blocks beneath the plaster, similar to Dartmoor farmhouses. The former hall contains chamfered beams with mutilated step-stops, and at the rear, there is a rounded stair turret. The inner room has a tall, old gable fireplace with a plain wood lintel, while the lower room has an old fireplace in the rear wall, though it is clearly not large enough for a kitchen, featuring a 20th-century granite lintel. The upper storey has not been inspected.
There is a good group of farm buildings located to the east of the farmhouse.
