Description
The byre located approximately 20 metres south-west of Lower Corndon Cottage dates from the 17th century and was reroofed in the 20th century. It is constructed from granite stone rubble with large, roughly-dressed quoins and has a corrugated iron roof, which replaced the original thatch.
This small byre features a hayloft above and has a gable-end front facing east. The gable-end is clad with corrugated iron and includes two doorways, both fitted with plain 19th-century doors, and a 20th-century window. There is a hayloft loading hatch on the right (north) side towards the front, and the roof is gable-ended.
Inside, the hayloft is supported by two neatly soffit-chamfered crossbeams that rest on granite corbels. The roof consists of 20th-century A-frame trusses, but there is evidence of the original roof structure. One raised cruck truss remains, sitting on a granite corbel, while the other corbels are still intact. The surviving original carpentry is of unusually high quality for an agricultural building.
