Description
The fishpond located approximately 50 metres north-east of Waye Barton is likely from the 17th century, although some believe it may be medieval. It is constructed with large granite rubble and features large, roughly dressed granite slabs as coping. The fishpond is shaped like a figure of eight and measures about 55 metres from end to end. It is set into a slope that faces north-east, causing the outer bank to drop sharply in that direction. The pond is supplied by two small streams, one at each end. On the outer bank, there is a granite ashlar trough that serves as an overflow channel, and below it is a granite-lined sump built into the bank. The construction of this fishpond, regardless of its exact date, was a significant effort and was intentionally designed to be visually appealing.
