Description
Dunnabridge Pound is a likely medieval pound, although some rebuilding may have occurred. It features a drystone wall made of large rough granite blocks and is arranged in a roughly circular plan. The entrance faces the present road and is divided by a granite monolith into a wider and narrower opening. Immediately to the left inside the pound is a large stone seat that is integral with the wall, topped with a large granite canopy that provides shelter.
This pound is very well preserved and holds significance in the history of the moor and its ancient tenements. A document from 1627 notes that tenants of the ancient tenements were accustomed to making three separate drifts each year for cattle and one for horses that grazed in the surrounding forest, attending Dunnabridge Pound for two or three days and nights for watering and pasturing their livestock. Those who complied were rewarded with a halfpenny loaf, while those who refused faced a fine of 6 shillings and 8 pence.
