Description

Apple Tree Cottage is probably a 17th or early 18th century house with a large mid-20th century addition to the right. The older part is built of solid, rough-cast walls, likely cob or stone, and has a thatched roof. A large rendered chimney stack is visible at the rear, with a later 19th or early 20th century red brick shaft. The original house has a single-depth plan and is two windows wide, with 20th-century wood casements featuring patterned leaded panes. A 20th-century thatched porch with glazed doors stands to the right of the entrance. To the left of the porch, above the window, is a 20th-century wood lintel with a buttress on the right, likely related to a former cart entrance. The later addition has been designed to blend with the original fabric. The interior contains no visible features of interest, although the plain feet of the original roof trusses are exposed in the roof space, which is not accessible. The building is included for group value as it forms the north-east end of a row of four cottages, comprising Compass Cottage, Honeysuckle and Little Thatch. These are listed separately.
