Description

This is a house, formerly a farmhouse, dating to the late 16th or 17th century, with a 20th-century addition to the left. The exterior is rendered stone, with areas of cob. It has a thatched roof. There are two large rendered chimneystacks, one on each gable; the left-hand stack has a projecting slate cap, and the right-hand stack, which served the former hall, features a tapered top and weatherings, with visible dressed stone blocks in the roof space. Originally, the house had a three-room plan and likely included a through-passage. The current entrance is a 20th-century addition; the original front door was on the left, with a corresponding blocked door in the rear wall. The hall stack originally backed onto the passage. Both end rooms contain fireplaces, although these are likely later additions.

The house is two stories high, with the left-hand end partially single-storied due to an unusual dip in the roofline. The addition to the left is also single-storied. There are three windows across the front, with 19th or early 20th-century wood casement windows, irregularly placed. Most windows have three panes per light, although a small upper-story window to the left of the front door has two panes. The present front door is planked and set within a thatched porch with solid walls.

Inside the former hall, there is a double-ovolo moulded beam with bar-stops, and a matching half-beam at the upper end. A large fireplace has plain granite jambs and an old chamfered wood lintel with vague stops, which is possibly not original. An oven located at the back of the fireplace has a shallow granite shelf in front, with a slightly curved stone surround. A thick, old board with a rounded end lies loose, believed to have been the original oven door. In the room to the right of the hall, a partial, rebuilt partition separates it from the hall. A small gable fireplace, likely a 17th or 18th-century addition, has sharply canted sides and a rough wood lintel. The room to the left of the hall has a large gable fireplace with substantial granite jambs and a 20th-century wood lintel. The floor of its fireplace is made of large granite slabs. The roof structure to the left of the hall stack was rebuilt in the 20th century, except for one old truss at the lower end. To the right of the stack, much of the original late 16th or 17th-century structure remains. The truss nearest the stack has threaded purlins and a ridge; the collar and feet are not visible. A slip tenon is let into the soffit of a rear principal rafter just below the apex, pegged at the upper end and standing free at the lower end, with no obvious purpose. The house is named after an 18th-century owner.
