Description

Okehampton Camp: Building 99, formerly known as Officers' Stables No. 2, is one of two former officers’ stables built between 1892 and 1893, designed by T H Gibson.

The building features an exposed red brick front with blue brick dressings. The modern windows on the front elevation have chamfered granite cills that may have been reused from the original openings, while the rear and side elevations are cement rendered. The roofs are covered with slate and have a rendered stack, along with uPVC fascias.

This single-storey building is rectangular in shape and aligned east to west, built into a north-facing slope. The front elevation consists of ten red brick bays divided by blue brick pilasters with chamfer detailing. The central entrance has been filled in with red brick, and the east and west entrances have been replaced with modern doors. There are rendered bays at either end, which were formerly harness rooms. The original stable windows, located under the eaves, are now blocked openings. Each bay features an offset two-light uPVC window and a steel upright. The two rendered end bays each contain a single-light window with a concrete cill, and there are additional modern uPVC openings on the side and rear elevations. The slate roof has a rendered ridge stack over the west end.

Inside, the original fittings have been removed. The corridor has been relocated to the rear, and the building has been subdivided by masonry walls into ten bedrooms and a washroom, with two additional rooms in the end rendered bays. The curved rear wall remains intact.

Additionally, there is a set of stone drains around the exterior of the building.
