Description

This is one of two former officers’ stables at Okehampton Camp, constructed between 1892 and 1893, designed by T H Gibson. The listing excludes a late 20th-century lean-to addition to the front elevation. The building is built of exposed red brick to the front, with blue brick dressings. Modern windows in the front elevation incorporate chamfered granite sills, potentially reused from earlier openings. The rear and side elevations are cement rendered. The roofs are slate covered, with rendered stacks.

The building is rectangular and aligned east to west, built into a north-facing slope. It is a single-storey structure with ten red brick bays to the front elevation, separated by blue brick pilasters with chamfered detailing. A former central entrance has been filled with red brick; the original east and west entrances have been replaced with modern doors. Rendered bays at each end originally housed harness rooms. The blocked stable windows, located under the eaves, are still visible. Each bay now contains an offset two-light uPVC window and a steel upright. The two rendered end bays each have a single-light window with a concrete cill. Modern uPVC windows are also present on the rear elevation, and a Crittal window is on the side.

Internally, the original fittings have been removed. The original corridor has been repositioned to the rear, and masonry walls now subdivide the interior into ten bedrooms and a washroom, with two additional rooms in the rendered end bays. The curved rear wall remains. The lean-to attached to the north side, together with all internal walls, modern fixtures and fittings, is not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest. Stone drains run around the exterior of the building.
