Description
This is a stable block dating from 1913 to 1914, situated approximately 15 metres north of Holystreet Mill (a listed building). The building is constructed of roughly dressed granite blocks with granite ashlar detailing, granite stacks with ashlar chimney shafts, and a slate roof.
The plan consists of a stable block with servant accommodation facing Holystreet Mill to the southwest. The stables and former haylofts project slightly forward. A tack room and coach house are located to the right (southeast), and servant accommodation to the left. Three axial stacks are present – two serving the accommodation and one serving the tack room. The main block is two storeys high.
The front elevation features a 3:3:1 window arrangement. The central three-window section houses the stables and is symmetrical, with a large Tudor arched doorway flanked by three-light windows with granite, chamfered mullions. Similar half-dormer windows are above, flanking a hayloft loading hatch (now a window). All have gables. The three-window section to the left is the cottage accommodation and has matching granite mullioned casements, with a Tudor arched doorway at the left end. The right-hand section (the tack room) features similar casements and a Tudor arched doorway. A lean-to coach house on the right end has large double doors within a segmental arch. All windows feature rectangular panes of leaded glass, and the doors feature planking with heavy wrought iron strap hinges. The roof is hipped at both ends, with a gabled dormer containing a timber casement on the right. A single-stable unit projects at right angles to the rear, gabled, and featuring a large doorway flanked by glazed side lights.
The interior retains original carpentry and joinery of a high quality, consistent with the exterior. Stable walls are lined with glazed white tiles, and stalls are iron-framed with tongue-and-groove planking.
The stables, the coach house, and Holystreet Mill form a group of listed buildings located within a picturesque valley.
