Description

The former engine shed, built around 1866 by the South Devon Railway Company and designed by engineer Peter Margery, is a railway engine shed located on Station Road in Moretonhampstead. Constructed from granite with dressed granite quoins and voussoirs, it features a gable-ended slate roof, with the ridge ventilator re-clad in corrugated asbestos sheets.

The shed has a rectangular plan, with the main entrance located at the west end and a store/office situated at the northeast corner. It is a single-storey structure that includes a large round arch entrance for engines on the west end. Both the north and south sides have four round-headed windows with glazing bars. The northeast corner also contains a small gable-ended office/store building, alongside a late 20th-century sheet steel shed built in the angle.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it is likely that the original roof structure remains intact. This engine shed is noted as a good early example of a broad gauge railway engine shed, built during the time when the Newton Abbot to Moretonhampstead branch line was opened.
