Description

This listing describes the railings, gates, gate piers, and a section of the boundary wall located on the north side of the burial ground of the Unitarian Chapel in Moretonhampstead, along with an adjacent lamp standard. The features date from the mid to late 19th century, while a fragment of the boundary wall is from the late 17th century to early 18th century.

The iron railings have spearhead shafts, with alternate shafts reaching only to the low middle rail, and they also feature spearheads. The gate piers are made of cast iron, octagonal in shape, and topped with moulded finials, all set on a granite ashlar plinth. To the west, there is a stone rubble wall that serves as the boundary wall for the burial ground. Parts of this wall are remnants of the meetinghouse built in 1692, which was enlarged in 1718 but became unsafe, leading to the construction of the existing chapel in 1802. The wall stands approximately 2.5 metres high.

On the east side, the lamp standard is made of cast iron, featuring a panelled pedestal, a tapered fluted shaft, and moulded and fluted ladder bars, topped with a wrought iron lamp-holder.
